I AM AN ALLY

Image
As I write this blog, I feel conflicted as to whether or not this post will be too controversial given the fragile state of our nation. However, I believe that the potential outrage that this post might provoke is exactly what the world needs right now. If I'm going to put it out there, I hope it does  start some conversations. Here it goes.... My name is Kristin.  I was born in Colorado to two parents who desperately wanted a child.  My mother was thrilled to find out that she was having a daughter.  I participated in cheerleading, gymnastics, track and field, lacrosse and diving in middle school and high school.  I was not required to personally pay for any of these extracurriculars.  I was accepted to several of my top-choice colleges and the question of how I would pay for my education was not one that I was forced to entertain.  I received job offers in the same zip code that I grew up in and I've gotta say that they were tempting...  ... Yet somehow

America: The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave - Or is It?

America: The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave - Or is It?  [[I want to clarify from the start that I am well aware that there are MANY Americans fighting with unwavering bravery. That said, I'm still forced to ask: where is the freedom?]] When a teacher is dragged out of a school meeting for asking a question and demanding an answer - and subsequently arrested, that is not freedom. When the American people said "NO!" on the repeal of the ACA so our President decided to dismantle it away piece by piece with executive orders, that is not freedom.  When Native Americans who have inhabited a (small) area of land for generations that we "gave" them are told that a harmful pipeline would be running directly through their sacred burial sites as well as threaten their water supply said "NO!", they were attacked with military force, facing water cannons in freezing temperatures, rubber bullets, unconstitutional arrests and censored med

They're Looking For You ~ List of Organizations To Help Locally

Image
STAND.... with others and get involved on a personal level with an organization that fits your passions and desires to help!  I have compiled a list of organizations that might prove helpful in finding a home for your volunteer efforts. I have separated them by cause although let's be honest, one cause affects all causes so all are important. I highly recommend checking out the organization FB page (if applicable) for info about upcoming events and how to get involved. Most organizations also have volunteer resources on their website - both FB page and website are listed. It's always a good idea to ask around and a great way to network with fellow Lion-Hearted activists! Side Note:  If you are part of an organization, non-profit or coalition and do not see your name on the list, please feel free to email me at: hersh.kristin303@gmail.com and I will put you on the list to help match volunteers with your organization!  GET INVOLVED | STAND! | VOLUNTEER | RESIST!

STAND: January 2018 Running Event List

Image
"Hope is born of participation in hopeful solutions." I am so overwhelmed by the number of responses of people wanting to get involved! As promised in my post yesterday, I have a running list with events in the Denver area that span most social justice issues. This is by no means a comprehensive list however it's a start! ORGANIZATIONS/COALITIONS/NON-PROFITS: If you have any upcoming events or opportunities for folks to get involved, please feel free to comment, either on this post or on the FB page link so that others can find your events. I will also continue combing through emails and FB event pages to be able to add more events to this list. The organizations and events represented here are all wonderful - I believe fully in their causes and am so thrilled to see more people wanting to get involved.  Please see the spreadsheet in the STAND: ONE AMERICAN'S FIGHT FOR AMERICA Google Drive folder as I cannot upload documents to this blog site.

STAND - One American's Fight for America

“The thought that we might die knowing in our hearts that we didn’t really go for it is actually scarier than the thought that they might actually kill us if we do.”  – Marianne Williamson in “Healing the Soul of America” I met a woman the other day – a smart, well-educated woman who doesn’t really like Trump (aka: My kind of people). As I was gaining excitement about the conversations we could have and all the good we could do, I was hit with an all too familiar reply – the oh-so-popular “I don’t like to pay attention to politics. It’s nasty, corrupt and negative. There’s not much we can do about it except argue with strangers/bots on social media while having no effect on the stories we’re discussing. I don’t like what’s happening but there’s nothing I can do about it.” I can agree with some of that…. Practices such as name-calling someone of a differing opinion on social media is a surefire way to solidify their point, kill the conversation, soil your argument and do no
